Hair Care Tips for Women in Amsterdam, From Our Stylists

Hard water, cold winters, summer sun and daily blow-drying. Here's the hair care routine our stylists actually recommend to women in Amsterdam Zuid.

Living in Amsterdam is wonderful for many things; your hair is not always one of them. Hard water from the tap, wind off the canals, cold dry winters, sudden hot summers, and the daily reach for a blow-dryer all add up. At Icon Hair Salon Amsterdam on Marathonweg, our stylists see the consequences every week. Here's the realistic women's hair care routine we actually recommend.

1. Wash less, condition more

Over-washing is easy to do in Amsterdam. Hard water strips natural oils faster than soft water does, and daily shampoo on coloured hair fades balayage, highlights and tones in weeks rather than months. Aim for two to three washes per week, use a sulfate-free shampoo on the scalp only, and condition mid-lengths to ends every wash.

2. A weekly treatment is non-negotiable

Once a week, give your hair fifteen minutes it can't get anywhere else: a deep treatment mask, applied after shampoo, left on while you do something else. If you colour your hair, balayage, highlights or full colour, a bond-building treatment every two weeks keeps the cuticle smooth and the shine real. We use professional masks in the salon and can recommend retail versions for home; just ask at your next appointment.

3. Heat protection, always

If you blow-dry, straighten, or use a curling iron, a heat protectant is not optional. Apply on damp hair before drying, and again on dry hair before any iron. The cheapest insurance for your colour and your length is a £20 bottle of protectant used consistently.

4. Sleep on silk, brush wet hair gently

Cotton pillowcases create friction; silk or satin pillowcases reduce breakage and frizz overnight. Brush wet hair only with a wide-tooth comb or a wet brush, starting from the ends and working up, never from the roots down through tangles.

5. Trim every 10-12 weeks, treat every 6-8

The myth that trims make hair grow faster is just that, a myth. But trims remove split ends before they travel up the strand, which keeps your length looking healthy instead of stringy. For most women in Amsterdam, a trim every 10-12 weeks and a salon treatment every 6-8 weeks is the sweet spot. Book both together on our [services page](/services).

6. Protect your colour from the sun

Even Dutch summers fade colour faster than you'd expect. A leave-in conditioner with UV filter, a hat for a long day on the canal, and a clarifying treatment after a holiday with chlorine or salt water all help your balayage hold its tone. If you're returning from a sun-heavy trip, book a treatment and gloss before your next big event.
